Frequently Asked Questions

5 questions
Docker containers and VMs both isolate applications, but they do so at different levels. VMs use a hypervisor to emulate full hardware and run a complete guest OS per instance (consuming gigabytes of RAM and taking minutes to boot), whereas Docker containers share the host machine's OS kernel and only bundle the application code and its dependencies — making them megabytes in size and able to start in milliseconds. This means you can typically run 100+ containers on a host where you might only run 10–15 VMs. VMs offer stronger hardware-level isolation (each has its own kernel), while containers use Linux kernel features like namespaces and cgroups for process-level isolation, making them far more resource-efficient and portable.
