You should never store the Terraform state file locally or commit it to version control — instead, use a remote backend such as AWS S3, Azure Blob Storage, or Google Cloud Storage. To prevent corruption from concurrent operations, enable state locking: Terraform 1.10+ supports native S3 state locking via 'use_lockfile = true', eliminating the older dependency on a separate DynamoDB table. Always restrict access to the state file using IAM policies, since it can contain sensitive plaintext data like passwords and API keys. Enable versioning on your backend storage bucket so you can roll back to a known-good previous version if the state file becomes corrupted.
