Overview

Docker is a revolutionary, open-source platform that has fundamentally transformed modern software development through containerization technology. It provides a standardized way for developers to package applications and their necessary dependencies into isolated, lightweight units called containers. This ensures that the application will run consistently and reliably across any environment. Unlike traditional virtual machines that require a heavy, dedicated guest operating system, Docker containers share the host machine's OS kernel. This architectural difference makes containers incredibly lightweight, allowing them to start up in milliseconds and requiring a fraction of system resources. Developers define containers using a simple Dockerfile to automate the build process. Docker has become the foundational building block for modern, cloud-native microservices architectures. By isolating services into individual containers, engineering teams can update, scale, and deploy specific parts of an application independently without affecting the broader system. Supported by a massive ecosystem, Docker has completely redefined how software is built and shipped.

Orphaned volume accumulation consumed 200GB of SSD storage

😀Pros

  • Docker volumes persist container data across container recreations and restarts.

🙁Cons

  • Removing stopped containers does not delete attached volumes
  • Accumulating hidden disk usage.

Removing stopped containers with 'docker rm' leaves attached named volumes intact in Docker storage directories. Over six months of development, orphaned database volumes accumulated 200GB of hidden storage consumption on developer laptops until manual 'docker volume prune' commands were identified.

🔥 Reasons for switching

Required data persistence, volume storage, and container state management.

Host bind mount permission bug broke file ownership

😀Pros

  • Bind mounts allow host source code directories to be mounted directly inside containers.

🙁Cons

  • Files generated by containers inside bind mounts became owned by root
  • Breaking local editing.

Using host bind mounts in our local development setup caused files created by containerized build scripts to be saved on the host machine under root ownership. Developers could not edit or delete generated files without running sudo chown, creating daily friction for new team members.

🔥 Reasons for switching

Sought host directory mounting, correct file permission mapping, and local code sync.

Un-rotated json-file logs filled host server disk

Ratings Breakdown

Customer support

2.0

😀Pros

  • Docker container logging captures application stdout and stderr output automatically.

🙁Cons

  • Default json-file log driver does not rotate logs
  • Causing container log files to fill host disk space.

The default Docker daemon json-file logging driver does not enforce log rotation out of the box. A verbose application container generated 120GB of log text over a weekend, filling the root disk partition and causing all containers on the host server to fail catastrophically.

🔥 Reasons for switching

Needed container logging, stdout stream capture, and centralized log aggregation.
