Is Opera's built-in VPN a real VPN, and what are its limitations?

Opera's built-in 'VPN' is technically an encrypted browser proxy, not a true system-wide VPN — it only routes traffic from within the Opera browser itself and does not encrypt or reroute traffic from other applications on your computer (unlike services such as NordVPN or ExpressVPN). It hides your IP address from websites and encrypts the connection between your browser and Opera's proxy server, which adds a useful layer of security on public Wi-Fi and can bypass geo-restricted content. However, it is not a no-logs VPN — Opera (owned by a consortium that includes Chinese investors) acts as the proxy operator, which is a consideration for users with high privacy requirements. Opera offers a separate paid 'VPN Pro' subscription for more robust, system-wide coverage.

What is Opera's 'Flow' feature, and how does cross-device sharing work?

Opera Flow is a built-in encrypted sharing space that lets you instantly send files, links, images, notes, and videos between your Opera desktop browser and the Opera Touch app on your phone, without needing to email yourself or use third-party cloud services. Setup requires a one-time QR code scan between your desktop and mobile devices, after which the connection is persistent and encrypted end-to-end. Flow appears as a persistent sidebar panel in Opera and syncs content in real time — you can click a file or link on your phone and have it appear immediately on your desktop. It's particularly useful for transferring URLs or images discovered on mobile to a desktop for further work.

What are Opera GX's RAM and CPU limiters, and how do they help gamers?

Opera GX is a special edition of Opera designed for gamers and includes a unique 'GX Control' panel (accessible via the gauge icon in the sidebar) that allows you to set hard limits on the maximum amount of RAM and CPU that the browser is permitted to consume at any given time. This is particularly valuable because Chromium-based browsers can aggressively consume system resources, which competes with demanding games running in the background or alongside the browser. For example, you can cap Opera GX to use no more than 2 GB of RAM and 20% CPU, ensuring your game retains enough system resources for smooth framerates.

How does Opera's account sync work, and what does it synchronize across devices?

Opera Sync requires a free Opera Account and synchronizes bookmarks, saved passwords, browsing history, Speed Dial shortcuts, and open tabs across Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS devices. One notable design decision is that Speed Dial entries are kept per-device rather than globally synced, because screen size and usage patterns differ significantly between a desktop monitor and a smartphone. Opera also supports Workspaces (named tab containers like 'Work', 'Gaming', 'Personal') and Tab Islands (automatic grouping of related tabs that spawned from the same source tab), both of which are local organizational features and are not currently synchronized via Opera Sync.

The privacy-conscious personal user with Opera's built-in free VPN proxy for basic IP masking and geo-restricted content access accessed geo-restricted research content from a different country using the built-in VPN without installing any additional extension.

🙁Cons

Built-in VPN is a proxy service not a true VPN and does not provide the encryption strength of a dedicated VPN application
A minor step that becomes second nature after a few sessions.

Following our content team migration to Opera for its integrated video tools, the built-in VPN proxy accessed a region-locked API documentation site without requiring any extension installation or VPN subscription.

🔥 Reasons for switching

Accessing geo-restricted API documentation without a VPN subscription by choosing Opera for its built-in free VPN proxy service, making built-in VPN free proxy service the decisive factor.

😀Pros

Our Web3 developer team with Opera's Lucid Mode video upscaling for sharper streaming video playback quality streaming video on our meeting room display appeared noticeably sharper after enabling Lucid Mode upscaling during our presentation.

🙁Cons

Lucid Mode upscaling quality improvement is most noticeable on low-resolution source video and less impactful on native HD content
Particularly relevant for teams switching from other tools.

Since our digital nomad team adopted Opera Turbo for low-bandwidth travel use, Lucid Mode made standard definition streaming video noticeably sharper on our presentation display during our product demonstration session.

🔥 Reasons for switching

Making standard definition streaming video noticeably sharper on displays by choosing Opera for its Lucid Mode video upscaling technology, making Lucid Mode video upscaling the decisive factor.
