ButtondownvsSubstack

Buttondown specializes in minimalist email newsletters. The stripped-back writing workflow avoids the dashboard clutter that often surrounds simple newsletters. Its minimalism can feel restrictive when a marketing team wants elaborate templates and automation.

Substack specializes in paid newsletter publishing. Publishing and paid subscriptions sit in one familiar reader experience, reducing the work of launching a publication. Audience discovery depends partly on the platform ecosystem, while customization is narrower than a standalone site.
