Google Docs uses Operational Transformation (OT) rather than Conflict-Free Replicated Data Types (CRDTs). OT translates every user action (insert, delete) into operations and routes them to a central server that acts as a sequencer to broadcast them to clients. While CRDTs are decentralized and scale well for peer-to-peer setups with heavier metadata overhead, OT is highly optimized for Google Docs' centralized client-server model to ensure low-latency document convergence.
