Chrome's high RAM usage is by design: it uses a multi-process architecture where each tab, extension, and background process runs in its own isolated OS process, so a crash in one tab won't bring down the whole browser. Chrome's built-in Memory Saver (Settings > Performance > Memory) addresses this by automatically suspending inactive tabs and freeing their memory — you can choose between Moderate, Balanced (recommended), and Maximum aggressiveness levels. When you return to a suspended tab, it reloads automatically, and you can whitelist specific sites (like web apps or music streaming) to prevent them from being suspended. In practice, Memory Saver can reclaim several hundred megabytes of RAM on systems with many open tabs.
