The 1Password Secret Key is a unique, computer-generated 128-bit (34-character) string that works together with your master password to encrypt your vault data. Unlike your master password alone, the Secret Key is never transmitted to 1Password's servers — it is stored only on your devices — meaning even a server breach cannot expose your data. You are required to enter it only the first time you sign in on a new device; after that, biometrics or your master password suffice for daily unlocking. You should save it in your Emergency Kit (downloaded during account setup) and store it somewhere physically safe, because 1Password cannot recover it for you if lost.
