Product Overview

What each platform does and who it's for

AWS Lambda
AWS Lambda
AWS Lambda is a pioneering, serverless computing service provided by Amazon Web Services that fundamentally changes how developers build applications. It allows engineering teams to execute code for virtually any backend service without the need to provision, manage, or scale physical servers. This enables developers to focus entirely on writing essential business logic. The core mechanism of AWS Lambda is its event-driven architecture, where functions remain dormant until triggered by a specific event. Once triggered, Lambda automatically provisions the necessary computing resources, runs the code, and scales out precisely to handle the volume of incoming requests. It ensures high availability and fault tolerance automatically across multiple zones. One of the most compelling advantages of AWS Lambda is its highly efficient, pay-as-you-go pricing model. Organizations are charged exclusively for the compute time consumed, meaning there are absolutely no costs incurred when the code is not running. Supporting popular languages like Node.js and Python, AWS Lambda serves as the foundational building block for modern microservices.

AWS Lambda

Serverless framework alternative also works well for Lambda

by Jasmine N.

The Serverless Framework's plugin ecosystem provides excellent toolchain integration for Lambda deployment. Teams should choose early between Serverless Framework, SAM, and CDK based on team background and integration requirements. Mixing tools across a large Lambda fleet creates operational complexity.

Pros:Third-party Serverless Framework and SAM CDK support provide multiple IaC options for Lambda.
Cons:Multiple IaC options for Lambda create tooling choice complexity for new serverless teams.

AWS Lambda

Cost effective though debugging distributed functions is challenging

by Dana M.

Lambda's operational cost model is genuinely excellent for variable traffic patterns. Debugging production failures across a fleet of Lambda functions without proper X-Ray tracing, correlation ID propagation, and structured logging is painful. Teams that invest in observability first have a dramatically better experience.

Pros:Lambda's pay-per-invocation model is highly cost effective for intermittent traffic patterns.
Cons:Debugging complex failures across distributed Lambda functions requires robust tracing infrastructure.

AWS Lambda

Outposts deploys Lambda workloads to on-premise hardware

by Wendy G.

Lambda on Outposts lets our regulated financial services client run serverless workloads on-premise for data residency compliance while maintaining identical Lambda programming model and tooling. Regulatory requirements that previously forced expensive on-premise server management now run as Lambda functions.

Pros:Lambda on Outposts extends serverless compute to on-premise infrastructure for data residency.
Cons:Outposts Lambda capacity is limited to the installed rack hardware unlike infinite cloud scaling.

AWS Lambda

Excellent scaling though burst limits can surprise teams

by George W.

Lambda auto-scaling is excellent for gradual traffic growth. Sudden burst traffic events that require thousands of concurrent executions immediately can hit the 3000 initial burst limit, causing throttling. Teams with genuinely unpredictable traffic spikes should pre-request higher burst limits from AWS Support.

Pros:Lambda's auto-scaling reaches thousands of concurrent executions without manual intervention.
Cons:Account-level burst limits of 3000 initial concurrent executions can be hit during sudden spikes.
